Greek-Canadian songwriter Yannis Fyssas releases a new song to honor the memory of Alekos Panagoulis, a resistance fighter against the Greek military dictatorship of 1967-1974. Panagoulis was killed on 1 May 1976 at the age of 36 in a suspicious car accident in Athens, Greece. May 1 2023 marks the 47th anniversary of his death.

It was a bitter May first during 1976
In a Fiat, Mr. Tsevas* stated for the record
"Perhaps you were driving too fast”.

It was a beautiful warm summer day
And an old radio was humming its song
News broke like blackened storm
And even the strongest of hearts shatter.

The convoy appeared in Lagonisi
Buried explosives and one fateful wire
They explode, but for a few seconds
The dictator and his car escape.

We entered a national deep freeze in 1967
Deserted islands were turned into prisons
In cells and police stations everywhere
Democracy is placed in handcuffs.

It was a bitter May first during 1976
You left like a black cloud
And even the strongest of hearts shatter.
