Γιά Μιά Λέξη / Gia Mia Lexi (Ode To A Word)
Music/Lyrics*: Yannis Fyssas
*Greek Lyrics based on poems written by Dimitris Fyssas
My search is but for one word, the perfect fit
To mend all my poems bit by bit
Elusive, stubborn, lost, but known
Only that word, I long to own.
If she emerges, I'll be complete
Each poetic battle, without defeat
Or I'll shred it with blows that sting
This poem ends now no more songs to sing.
With some effort, words can be found,
Defining things, seeking meaning profound
Yet, it's hard to find the missing link
Things to define words, to make hearts sing.
And if they come, I'll surely mend
Each poem's fight, each verse I tend
Or I'll crush it with blows that sting
This poem dies here no more songs to sing
This poem dies here no more songs to sing.
I found one word at last, so empowered,
She led me far away, to places uncharted
She’s no longer enough, verses want to break free
They too feel estranged, longing for infinity.
This is why I shred this work, with bloody fists,
And from right now on this poem ceases to exist.
Aν μου προκύψει ολοκληρώνω

Music & Lyrics: Yannis Fyssas
The truth trembles when menaced with lies
Even the past is hushed out of view
Give up the rearview, look straight ahead
History's maze unfolds, thread by thread.
When will these lands bloom with grace
When will humans find wisdom to embrace
A nation's struggle, hopes betrayed
Flag lowered, torn and frayed
With both pockets worn out
Our hopes buried, we cope without.
Black are our garments, borrowed and frayed,
Promises rusted, hope starts to fade.
The boat sets sail with billowing sails,
Four paths to reach the divine trails.
When will these lands bloom and sway
When will people find their way
A nation's struggle, hopes betrayed
Flag lowered, torn and frayed
With a glimmer of light a new path begins,
On whispers of hope, we'll float on paper wings.

Πρωτομαγιά του '76 | Protomagia Toy ‘76 (May 1st 1976)
Music/Lyrics: Yannis Fyssas
It was a bitter May first during 1976
In a Fiat, Mr. Tsevas* stated for the record
"Perhaps you were driving too fast”.
It was a beautiful warm summer day
And an old radio was humming its song
News broke like blackened storm
And even the strongest of hearts shatter.
The convoy appeared in Lagonisi
Buried explosives and one fateful wire
They explode, but for a few seconds
The dictator and his car escape.
We entered a national deep freeze in 1967
Deserted islands were turned into prisons
In cells and police stations everywhere
Democracy is placed in handcuffs.
It was a bitter May first during 1976
You left like a black cloud
And even the strongest of hearts shatter.

Music & Lyrics*: Yannis Fyssas
*Greek Lyrics based on poems written by Dimitris Fyssas
Natty Aunties, my rhymes don't tread
On partisan paths where votes are spread
Nor for those esteemed and well-to-do
Who resonate with the right's point of view.
I don't care for righteous aunts with buns tied neat
Or posh school kids, where wealth and privilege meet
Nor for the foremen working for KKE*2
Captains camouflaged amid the laboring sea.
I’d prefer to reach the discerning few
Daring minds and knowledge they must pursue
Eloping spirits their new paths unfold
Cadets skipping duties, embracing the bold.
I write for those who go against the grain
Forever unyielding, in defiance they remain
Those who cherish the B&W movie trend
And read Karyotakis, till the night's end.
I write for women harvesting verdant fields
For kids without computers, where resilience wields
Those wrongfully locked up, but still believe
For Floyd who whispered "I can't breathe".
I don't pen my rhymes for the privileged few.

Greek Lyrics: Leon Takis
Music: Thodoris Leontarakis & Yannis Fyssas
Πώς Φτάσαμε Εδώ / Pos Ftasame Edo (Fate's Intricate Plays)
The silent city whispers tales yet to be told
On streets shadows dance as dawn unfolds
My thoughts wander a cold retrospection
But now you're gone, a heart's insurrection.
Where does love wander on this eve of grace
Around every corner, your perfume leaves a trace
In empty squares and parks, love's puzzle I retrace
Where does love wander under the moon's gaze
I look for you in an endless maze
No reasons to be found just fate's intricate plays.
Beneath the starry sky where illusions are wound
Lost in the shadows, love's whispers drowned
A broken heart mourns, blaming its fate
The path to this place, I can't seem to trace.

Music and Lyrics*: Yannis Fyssas
*Greek lyrics Inspired by several online, print & radio interviews of George Dalaras (2020/2021) and the 1983 Poem by Manolis Anagnostakis: Fovamai / Μανώλης Αναγνωστάκης: Φοβάμαι
TRANSLATION:
The state of affairs is getting under my skin
Surrounded by Europe but everything is unclear
If numbers surpass human value
We might consider reversing the charges
I don't cling to strictly confined thought
Time's slow erosion brings ideas to fray
Quietly I pursue what others have not
To fill my own voids, my own way
We are but a human alloy of contradictions
Amidst the haze that shrouds our daily view
We are only human, full of certitude and chaos
A mix of beauty and rust, old and new
Terrified of fellow citizens, compliant for 7 years*1
In town squares, one fine July morning*2
Chanting and waving flags, "Give the junta back to us"
This year was even scarier, than the last
We are but a human alloy of contradictions
Amidst the haze that shrouds our daily view
We are only human, full of certitude and chaos
A mix of beauty and rust, old and new
The state of affairs is still getting under my skin
*1 This alludes to the 7 years Greece was in a dictatorship/military coup (Junta) and some folks pretended everything was fine (due to their own benefit from the junta - this is usually the same people that vote white nationalist / far right)
After the junta fell, some of these went on the streets to denounce the junta when there was no danger of the Junta killing/torturing them, but during the dictatorship, they played it "safe" by not stirring the pot. There are thousands points of reference of brutal torture and killings by the Junta at this time. Many books have been published, films, documetaries and interviews have exposed how the Junta disposed of opponents or artists at the time.
*2 July 1974 was when the Junta fell

Τα Τραγούδια Δέν Ακούς | Ta Tragoudia Den Akous (Songs You Missed)
Music & Lyrics: Thomas Theodorou & Yannis Fyssas
Όλοι ρωτάγανε πως έφυγα μακριά;

Λίγοι Και Καλοί / Ligoi Kai Kaloi (The Precious & Few)
Music & Lyrics*: Yannis Fyssas
*Lyrics loosely based on a blog attributed to Marisa Papa
As we board, I note those in sight,
A host of friends, on this train of life
A life brimming with dreams and plans
Slowly waning, like drifting sands
A lucid dream, there ain't no turning back.
If you set out with a crowd so grand
Gradually you'll find they'll disband
The train empties don't worry, life's train rolls on through
Like lost years in the dark, the stations pass you by
Most people step off, but a handful carry through
The precious and few.
In our small yard, rain whispers its tale
Night's shadows dance, as storm winds prevail
I'll linger on, as the station fades from view
When others depart, I'll remain true
This adventure of ours, the only truth to rely
When the curtain falls, it's you and I, side by side.

Στήν Αριστοτέλους | Stin Aristotelous (At Aristotelous Square)

Φωτογράφος Στίς Κηδείες / Fotografos Stis Keideies (Photographer at Funerals)
Music & Lyrics*: Yannis Fyssas
*Greek Lyrics based on poetry written by Nikos Dimou
The photographer at funerals is Nobody,
Nobody captures them, the moments disappear slowly
Faded instances, we once captured on paper,
Little scraps swirling in the wind, like life's tally.
Shadows from cypress trees strike their faces,
Faces staring blankly at this void.
But there's no grasp, they try to hold the emptiness,
In an empty space they yearn to grasp a hollow sky.
Yet as a photographic subject, they excel,
Only at funerals will you find genuine people.
Tears held like keepsakes,
Only at funerals will you find unmasked souls.
Either way, one day, we'll part ways,
Gently, we'll reach the end of the line.
Why’d you keep this photograph, grim and obscure?
I'd rather not part separately, I'd rather part together.
December came and went, the holidays are gone,
There’s always time, but today a bit less,
Old photographs, when we used to laugh,
Faded papers, no longer measuring life

Music: Yannis Fyssas
Lyrics: Thomas Apostolidis & Yannis Fyssas*
*Chorus lyrics based on poetry written by Orfeas Peridis "Ένα μικρό παιδί σ' ακολουθεί"

Τελικά Ποιός Φτάιει | Telika Poios Ftaiei (Who’s to Blame)
Music & Lyrics*: Yannis Fyssas
*Greek Lyrics: Based on poetry written by Dimitris Fyssas & a Greek social media meme (author unknown).
I don't know my neighborhood no more
No familiar faces wandering 'round,
Old friend’s homes have fallen
Like whispers lost, no one to be found.
Concrete stacks, these they call houses,
Is it excess or euphemism they sell
Apartments that will always be
Horizontally fractured disintegrating shells.
Common spaces, balconies, and guards,
Neither you nor I were in these cards
Who’s to blame
The one who speaks the lies,
Or the one who believes the song
The one who supposedly kills you
Or you, who hands over your knife
In the end, tell me
Who's the one to blame
A knight, a lone duelist I've become
The minstrel of old houses' song
The youth of lost friends, a fading hum
Your memory's compass, leading me along.
Our story is fading, lost to the past
Great words spoken and erased, like ghosts they depart
Places and people forgotten, memories recast
Even guilt itself is gone, we’re drifting apart.
We are like a paining’s nail, a mark left on the wall
Before a new layer of paint covers it all
Who's to blame for this tragic fall

Εσύ Δεν Είσαι Απαραίτητος | Esy Den Eisai Aparaititos (You Are Not Necessary)
Music & Lyrics*: Yannis Fyssas
*Lyrics based on a poem by Haroon Rashid "We Fell Asleep In One World And Woke Up In Another"
We fell asleep in one world, but woke up in another.
Hugs and kisses have become weapons and are not permitted.
They can't visit our parents or old friends
The Earth is our homeland, she ain't scared of us, she puts us in her
crosshairs.
The planet may be sending a messsage
We'll have to some time in the big house
Seems that we the clever ones, didn't do our homework
The air, the water, all the Earth and the sky
Without you, is just fine
On your return, listen, I'm not even asking for a kick-back
Just remember, you ain't the boss
You are not necesarry.
We are all in a hurry, passangers on a lonely Earth
As it spins, it's flogging us triumphantly
But we are automatons in world that's already automatic
When the scales have been tampered, who will win in the end?
The planet is sending a messsage:
Return the dice to the house.
The earth will heal, we are the virus.
We fell asleep.
Ποιος άραγε λοιπόν θα κερδίσει με πειραγμένη ζυγαριά;
